creative klatch

Today the knit group met at Abundant Yarns in southeast. It's a beautiful store with an in-house cafe called the Busy Bee that serves wonderful soups and great sandwiches.

Anyway, most of the gang was there today working on scarves, socks, an afghan and a sweater. It was a really fun day with lots of discussion about activities that are good prompts for unleashing your creativity. Using a line from a book, a song, a photograph, keeping a journal and then setting yourself a specific goal and time frame. Sounded like a lot of fun. Janet is leaving this weekend for her big taping in Dallas and this is a shout out to her. We all know you'll be great!

Great Gallery Show

shelters%201.jpg

Rick and I went to the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery on State Street in Salem to see this great show called "Shelters." It is a fundraising show that benefits the Salem Outreach Shelter. I just love the concept. Each of the 100 participating artists received a 5 x 8 inch piece of cardboard through the mail and had two months to create something with it around the theme shelters and then return it to the gallery. Lots of great mixed media pieces, my favorite! Some very simple, Some very elaborate. It was a fun show and a great gallery. The owner carries some of my favorite ceramic and mixed media artists that I've seen in the Portland area.

Sushi Rolls quilt

I've been slowly working on this quilt top and am happy with all the colors and arrangement. My problem is with the those white triangles. I wanted to piece them with the focus fabric but you don't see them because the focus fabric is so busy. Now I've tried them with one of the accent fabrics that is pretty neutral and am liking it alot better. You can see in the picture the comparison of the two pieced triangles. Of course I'll have to go out and search for that neutral fabric because I only have a small piece left. Isn't that always the way it works! I'm still loving the quilt though so it will get done.

New quilt for classes

I'm working on new quilts that will be good for teaching. Although the Sushi Rolls is fabulous, now I'm obsessed with this one as well. I'm in an Asian mood so I was thinking of calling it Egg Drop Soup. It's a simple technique with no templates; it's a "liberated" piecing style. Very fun to do and there are infinite arrangement possibilities. And I'm loving the color palette. egg%20drop%20soup.JPG

great birthday presents

Just want to share a great present I gave to myself on my birthday! Because of my South Carolina heritage, I have a thing for southern foods, beaches, literature and art. I have always loved the "Charleston" baskets. They are made of sweet grass and are made in that area of south carolina. A friend went there on a trip recently and I asked if she would find me a tray if they weren't too spendy. Well, they are very spendy but her husband managed to haggle down the price to a reasonable number and voila, another basket for me! Yeah! baskets.JPG

Back from the Flu

I thought I could get through the whole winter without catching the flu. I was wrong. Anyway, I'm back and just wanted to post some pictures from a wonderful lecture I went to by Michele Wipplinger. She is an amazing woman who has traveled the globe helping native people find outlets for their handwork. Her website is earthues.com. HPIM0173.JPG HPIM0174.JPG HPIM0176.JPG
