Coasters

I recently made some coasters for gifts and am in love with making them. They are fun, easy and so cute. Here’s how to do it. Pick out four fabrics that you like for the front of the coaster, one fabric for the back and cut out a 5″ square of each.

coaster1

Now fold each of the four front fabrics in half and press.

You are going to place them so that the folded edges are towards the center and they are over, under, over, under, like how you close the top of a cardboard box.

coaster3

Pin in place. Pin the back square onto the bottom, right sides together.

coaster4

Sew around the square 1/4″ in from the edges, turning at the corners so you don’t go all the way out to the edge of the fabric.

coaster5

Once you’ve sewn all the way around, trim the edges with pinking shears. This lessens the amount of fabric in the seam allowance and allows the edges to lay flatter.

coaster6

Now just turn and press and you’re done.

You can whip up a set of eight of these, start to finish, in half an hour. Tie them up with a ribbon and you’ve got a great gift. I’m dying to make more, just need to find someone to give them to!
