Charleston

I just got back from a wonderful trip to South Carolina.  I haven’t lived there for years, but it’s my home state  and all my family is there.  We took a day trip to Charleston, SC. It is a beautiful city with so much history. I haven’t been back in forever and I really wanted to show it to Rick since he’s such a history buff. The architecture in the old section of town along the Battery is amazing. I took so many pictures of houses.

In this next house, they have a spiral staircase that was built by the slaves and is only connected to the house at the bottom step and the top step. Other than that, it is only connected to itself. All done without nails, just pegs. Our guide was saying that builders have tried to duplicate it but have been unsuccessful.

I was also inspired by all the wrought iron. There were many amazing fences and gates and I took tons of pictures. They make me think of quilting designs.

Charleston is known for it’s gardens as well as it’s architecture. My visit was a bit too early to really see them, although the cherry trees were just starting to bloom.

Charleston is the only place I know where you can get Sweet Grass Baskets. I’ve collected several over the years and so I bought myself one while I was there. Isn’t it beautiful?

I would highly recommend a visit to Charleston if you are headed to the south. We did the carriage tour of the old part of town and it was well worth it.  Our guide was great, lots of info and quite witty. There is plenty more that I would go back for. Several of the old houses are now museums and I think you can get a museum pass that will get you into all of them. They also have home and garden tours later in the spring that are a big deal. And I would love to take the ferry out to see Fort Sumter. The first shot of the Civil War took place there.
