The Art Bras

Mom and I spent a day in Columbia enjoying art. First we went to see the Art Bra exhibit. The Art Bras were made by the Quilters of South Carolina and will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the Best Chance Network, an organization that provides breast cancer screening for women who otherwise couldn’t afford it. They were wonderful. Some were hilarious, some were beautiful. We really enjoyed the exhibit.  columbia1 columbia2

After the seeing the Art Bras, we went over to the Columbia Museum of Art to see the “Turner to Cezanne” exhibit. These paintings are part of the Davies Collection from the National Museum of Wales. Not only were the paintings incredible, but the story of the two Davies sisters was also fascinating. There were several pieces that I hadn’t seen before, either in museums or in books. We really loved this exhibit. If I lived there, I would definitely go back again. There was just so much to take in.

Downtown Columbia is pretty pathetic. We have such a nice downtown here in Portland. It is full of thriving businesses, shops, restaurants, theaters, galleries. We have many reasons to go downtown. Columbia, not so much. Most of it looked dirty and worn out. Across from the Museum  there were a couple of nice old buildings that have been preserved.

And I just have to mention that the whole time I was in South Carolina, it was sunny and in the 70’s and 80’s. Nice change from Portland in March.
