Yesterday I taught a Round Division workshop for the Ladies of the Lake quilt guild in Longview, WA. The students were great and we had a wonderful time. The most important insight to take away from this workshop is how to pick the fabrics for the quilt. You really need to have two distinct groups of fabrics that complement each other. I really enjoy going through everyone’s fabrics and making two coherent groups out of what they have brought.
To see what I mean, here is my process for picking out fabrics to demo with. I started out with these “B” pieces because they were already cut leftovers from my Meritation quilt.
Then I pulled out every print I had that had a modern feel with these colors in them.
Too many fabrics and not coherent enough. As I told the gals yesterday, your fabric choices need to serve the vision for the quilt. Even if you REALLY like a print, it if doesn’t fit the vision, don’t force it into the quilt. So I pared down. Here is what I tossed.
Some of these I really love and it was hard to toss them, but out they went. Here is what is left.
Still a lot of variation but a much more coherent group to complement the “B”s. Notice that I purposely kept in a really dark print and a really light print. Having a range of values is important. Those super dark and light prints make all the mediums look better.
Here are the final selections together.
As soon as I get them downloaded, I’ll post some pictures of the students work. There were some great fabrics groups and fun combinations.
