Rick and I participated in the Sunday Parkways event that was held in our neighborhood this past Sunday. The city closed 7 miles of streets to traffic, creating a loop for biking, walking, running, skating, whatever. The loop went by three parks where there were information booths, food booths, music and activities.
This event is modeled after an event in Bogota, Columbia. Every Sunday 70 miles of road are closed to traffic for exercise. You can watch a short video about it on the Sunday Parkways site. They say in the video that people of the city have become more tolerant, happier and feel better about their city since the event started. Amazing.
It was a beautiful day and there were tons of people out; families, couples, kids, young people, old people.
It’s not everyday you see someone drumming on a cart on a bike.
This was the second Sunday Parkways event so far this summer, each in a different area of the city. There will be a third event on August 16th in Southeast Portland. There is a map of the route here on the Sunday Parkways website. Come and enjoy.
