We have this guy in Northwest Portland who has glued miniature statues of buildings all over his car. I LOVE it. I mean how cool would it be to totally turn your car into one big statue. Rick would kill me if I did anything like that but boy do I love that kind of stuff. I suggested a bottle tree in the front yard but he vetoed that idea as well.

In Houston, they take their art cars seriously. They have a museum dedicated to art cars. And they have an annual parade that is a big deal. Last year there were 250 art cars and over 200,000 spectators. Like I said, they take this seriously.

Here are a few of the cars we saw.

The detail on this car was amazing.

This one we saw just out on the street one day.

This was outside of the museum. Why the horse is there I have no idea.

My sister is just two years younger than me and with the softer memories that come from age, I remember us as being good pals growing up. We moved around a bit and so it was always great that we had each other. But maybe I am looking at the past with some rose colored glasses. Check out my New Years Resolution from 1968. I was nine years old.

I really went to Houston to visit with my family. It just so happened that the big quilt show was that same week :). I met up with my sister and my brother, and my mom, none of whom are quilters or really know much about our crazy world. They were so fabulous about going to show and they had a great time. It's always fun to be with people who aren't quilters and watch them be utterly amazed at what a quilt can be these days.

Here's the family:

They had such a good time the first day that they agreed to return with me for day two. There's just no way to see everything in one day. I wish I could take a picture that would capture the enormity of the show, but I think it's impossible. This picture shows about a quarter of the lunch area. It is a sea of women!

I don't like to post pictures of other people's quilts unless I ask first so I'm not going to put a bunch on here. However, I do want to post a picture of a quilt by Susan Shie. There was a section of "political" quilts; appropriate seeing how the show was right before the election. This quilt had all the wonderful messages of hope and change from President elect Barack Obama. I loved it.

Here is a link to the IQA page with pictures of all the winners: http://www.quilts.org/winners.html.

And finally, I couldn't resist taking a picture of these women. (I did ask them first) They were so beautiful.

In a vacant lot behind a Target Store, there are 32 president heads created by David Adickes. I don't really know why he created them or what they are planned for, but they were quite something to see. The heads are 18 feet tall and made of some kind of plaster.

The Beer Can House was started in 1968 by John Milkovisch, a retired Southern Pacific worker. He began inlaying marbles, metal and rocks into concrete in the front and back yards and when he was done with that he started working on the house. Apparently he and his wife Mary liked beer and he began saving all the cans. He cut the cans apart and used the flattened part for the shingles and the round ends to make garlands to hang from the eaves. It is estimated that there are 50,000 beer cans on the house and fences and over 20,000 marbles in the yards. It took him 20 years to complete his projects.
The house is now owned by a non-profit and is open free to the public on the weekends. They have a cute 10 minute video with interviews with John, Mary and one of their sons. He just seemed like a really normal guy.

Thursday I spent the day sewing with some friends in Oceanside and then I taught Friday and Saturday. The weather was beautiful and I got in a couple of hikes over the mountain there. (Thanks Carrie and Beth!)
On Friday I taught Animal Chains and we had a blast. Everyone was so enthused and got lots done. It's such a happy quilt. Here are a few pictures and hopefully I got the names right. I tend to remember students by their work not their names. I guess it's an occupational hazard.

This little beauty I made myself. I copied it after one I had seen in a gift store. It was way too expensive so I made my own. She is about 18 inches tall with a flannel dress and dowels for legs. The hat is made from some coarse, openy ribbon, her head is wood and her hands are painted muslin. It was a long process but I'm so glad I persevered.

I'll be away from my computer for a few days. I'm heading down to the beach to teach at Ocean Waves Quilt Camp. More pictures when I get back.

I know this is not a Halloween decoration but it is HORRIBLE. Yes, this is what our basement bedroom and bath looks like at the moment. Rick and I spent this weekend ripping out the floors and the baseboard. We are having the concrete refinished which I am very excited about. It will be stained a rusty, browny color with a glossy sealant on top. It will look fab and will be very low maintenance.
Of course we now have to redo the baseboards and deal with the stairs. We decided against ripping out the vanity and shower in the bathroom. They are both gross but we just couldn't face that whole can of worms. So now you know why I've not been getting any sewing done; it's home improvement time!
